"Culture would seem … first and foremost, to be the knowledge of what makes man something other than an accident of the universe, be it by deepening his harmony with the world, or by the lucid consciousness of his revolt from it. … Culture is the sum of all the forms of art, of love and of thought, which, in the course of centuries, have enabled man to be less enslaved." André Malraux
Quote in Malraux : An Essay in Political Criticism‎ (1967) by David O. Wilkinson, p. 153.

“The world will ask you who you are, and if you don't know, the world will tell you” Carl Jung

Brought up on the African continent, with roots in France, the USA and Eastern Europe, Gabrielle Birnholz comes from a culturally-mixed background. Because of her international life experience, Gabrielle makes it a moral commitment to produce photographic documents with the aim to retain heritage and the precariousness of life. She also seeks to build bridges of understanding by investigating notions of perception. Using photographic tools and other mediums, she produces fictional stories and questions the intangible and the spiritual world.

Gabrielle Birnholz is a multidisciplinary artist and photographer based in Paris, France. She has studied fine arts at Ecole Européenne Supérieure d’Art de Bretagne of Rennes (EESAB), and Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux Arts of Paris (ENSBA). She also studied dance in various institutions. The influence of western education has helped her coin academic and experiential languages to express her nomadic and transcultural vision. She has been involved as a photographer in anthropological and textile research in West Africa and she is currently investigating “The Feminine Power" while in Mexico at the Casa Lu art residency.

“The world is a book, and those who do not travel only read one page.” Augustine of Hippo
